The Faith of Jesus

Lesson 15

What the Bible teaches about the gift of prophecy

The gift of prophecy

1.    To Whom does God reveal His purpose? (Amos 3:7)
7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing,
Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets

2.    How does God communicate with the prophet? (Numbers 12: 6)
Then He said,       “Hear now My words:       If there is a prophet among you,       I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision;       I speak to him in a dream.

3.    Can a woman be a prophet? (Joel 2:28)
28 “ And it shall come to pass afterward       That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;       Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,       Your old men shall dream dreams,       Your young men shall see visions.

The gift of prophecy and the true Church

4.    Did the primitive Church have prophets? (1 Corinthians 12:28)
28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.

5.    What was predicted about the gift of prophecy in the true Church? (Revelation 12:17, 19:10)
17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ; 10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

6.    The promise of the gift of prophecy was fulfilled in the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Mrs. Ellen G. White (See comment).

What should I do?

7.    Appreciate the prophecies (1 Thessalonians 5:20)
20 Do not despise prophecies.

8.    Be alert to the prophecies (2 Peter 1:19)
19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed,[a] which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;

9.    Believe in the prophets (2 Chronicles 20: 20)
20 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the LORD your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.”

10. Love God with all your heart (Matthew 22:37)
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind

My resolution

Accept the wonderful gift of prophecy given by God to his Church.
