What the Bible teaches on how to observe the Sabbath
Correct way to respect the Sabbath
1. What did God do with the Sabbath? (Genesis 2:1-3)
1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
2. On what day should preparations be made? (Exodus 16:22, 23)
22 And so it was, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. 23 Then he said to them, “This is what the LORD has said: ‘Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.’”
3. When does the Sabbath begin? (Leviticus 23:32).
32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your sabbath.”
4. What should we abstain from on Sabbath? (Exodus 20:10).
10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
5. Where should we attend on the Sabbath? (Luke 4:16)
16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
6. What can be done on Sabbath? (Matthew 12:12)
12 Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
7. What promise does God give to who is faithful? (Psalm 37:25)
25 I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread.
8. What protection will God give to who is obedient? (Deuteronomy 11:13-15)
13 ‘And it shall be that if you earnestly obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the LORD your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 then I[a] will give you the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil. 15 And I will send grass in your fields for your livestock, that you may eat and be filled.
What should I do?
9. Faithfully obey to what God sends (James 4:17)
17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
10. Fully trust in Jesus. (Philippians 4: 13)
