The faith of Jesus

Lesson 17

What the Bible teaches about of baptism

True baptism

1.    Who commanded the baptism? (Matthew 28:18-20)
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen

2. What is the correct way to baptize? (Matthew 3:13-16)
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

3. Is the baptism necessary to be saved? (Mark 16:16)
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

Wonderful results from the baptism

4. What two wonderful blessings are received with baptism? (Acts 2:38)
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

5. The baptized join what divine institution? (Acts 2:41, 42, 47)
41 Then those who gladly  received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

6. What glorious experience does the baptized obtain? (Romans 6: 4)
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

What should I do?

7. Believe in the Lord Jesus (Acts 8:37)
37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.”
And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

8. Abandon sin (Romans 6:11-13)
11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

9. Ask for the Holy Baptism (Acts 8:35-38)
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

10. Respond promptly to God's call (Hebrews 3:15)
15 while it is said: “ Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

My resolution:

I believe in Holy baptism by immersion. I wish to be baptized following the example of our Lord Jesus Christ.
