The Faith of Jesus

Lesson 14

What the Bible teaches about the Church

Founder and Foundation

1. Who founded the Christian Church? (Matthew 16:16-18)
16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

2. Who is the foundation of the Church? (Ephesians 2:20).
20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.

Organization of the Church

3. Who are the leaders of the Church? (Ephesians 4:11-12)
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ

4. What is the triple mission of the Church? (Matthew 4:23)
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.

5. How should the church be governed? (Acts 6:1-4)
1 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists,[a] because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

Characteristics of the true Church

6. What example should the church follow? (John 13:15)
15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

7. What will be the standard conduct of the Church? (Revelation 12:17).
17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

8. What gift will the Church possess? (Revelation 19:10)
10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

What should I do?

9. Join with the true Church (Acts 2:41)
41 Then those who gladly[a] received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them

10. Stay faithful and firm (2 Peter 1:10-12)
10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 12 For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth

My resolution:

I believe that Jesus founded the Church. I would like to join it and be faithful unto the end.
