Lesson 11

What the Bible teaches about the resting day

What the Bible teaches about the day of rest

1. According to the law of God, what day is the day of rest? (Exodus 20:8-11)
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

2. To whose benefit was the Sabbath given? (Mark 2:27)
27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.

History of the Holy Sabbath

3. Who instituted the Sabbath, and when was it done? (Genesis 2:1-3)
1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made

4. What day was respected by our Lord Jesus Christ? (Luke 4:16)
16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.

5. What day was kept by the Virgin Mary? (Luke 23:56)
56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

6. What day was respected by the Holy Apostles? (Acts17:2) ; (Acts 18:4)
2 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures.
4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks

7. What day will be kept in heaven? (Isaiah 66: 22, 23)
22 “ For as the new heavens and the new earth Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the LORD, “ So shall your descendants and your name remain.   23 And it shall come to pass
That from one New Moon to another, And from one Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the LORD.

What should I do?

8. Be careful to not profane the Sabbath (Isaiah 56:2)
2 Blessed is the man who does this, And the son of man who lays hold on it; Who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, And keeps his hand from doing any evil.”

9. Venerate the Sabbath doing God’s will (Isaiah 58:13-14)
13 “ If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the LORD honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words, 14 Then you shall delight yourself in the LORD; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

10. Obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29)
29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.

11. Love God with all your heart (Matthew 22:37)
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.

My resolution

I believe that the Sabbath is the day of the Lord. I promise to respect it faithfully.
