The Faith of Jesus

Lesson 10

What the Bible teaches about the Holy Law of God

Importance of the holy law

1. Who wrote the holy law and how was it written? (Exodus 31:18)
18 And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.

2. What does the holy law reveal? (1 John 3:4)
4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

3. To whom does the law lead us? (Galatians 3:24)
24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

4. Read and comment the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20:3-17)
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
8 “ Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
12 “ Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
       13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
       15 “You shall not steal.
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.

Perpetuity of holy law

5. What was the attitude of Jesus towards the law? (John 15:10)
10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

6. Did Jesus make changes to the commandments? (Matthew 5:17, 18)
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

7. Can someone change the holy commandments? (Ecclesiastes 3:14)
14 I know that whatever God does,       It shall be forever.       Nothing can be added to it,       And nothing taken from it.       God does it, that men should fear before Him

What should I do?

8. Love God and keep his law (John 14:15)
15 “If you love Me, keep[a] My commandments

9. Keep the commandments (Psalm 119:44)
44 So shall I keep Your law continually,         Forever and ever

10. Respect all the commandments (James 2:10)
10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all

11. Love God with all my heart (Matthew 22:37)
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.

My resolution

I accept to respect God's holy law. I will try, with the help of God, to respect all of the commandments.
