The faith of Jesus

Lesson 8

What the Bible teaches about the forgiveness of sins

The only way of salvation

1.    Thanks to whom and to what we are saved? (1 Peter 2:24)
24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed

2.    How much does salvation cost? (Romans 3:24)
24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus

Obtaining forgiveness

3.    What sincere recognition must a sinner experience? (Luke 18:10-14)
10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

4.    What deep feeling is indispensable? (Acts 2:37-38)
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

5.       What should be done with the sins? (Psalms 32:3-5)
3 When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long.
4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer.  Selah 5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.  Selah

The Sweet security of forgiveness

6.    What wonderful offer does God make? (Isaiah 1:18)
“ Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “ Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.

7.    How complete is the divine forgiveness? (Isaiah 43:25)
25 “ I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins

What should I do?

8.    Repent from the bottom of my heart (Acts 3:19)
19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord

9.    Confess all the sins (1 John 1:9)
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness

10. Experience the conversion (Ezekiel 36:25-27)
25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them

11. Love God with all my heart (Matthew 22:37)
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
